Out and About: Duluth – Canal Park

Duluth, Minnesota – Canal Park

Light House out on the Canal

A couple weeks ago we decided to get into the car and just drive somewhere we let a coin determine which direction we were going to head and we ended up heading north.  We hadn’t really decided where we were going once we had it in our minds that we were going north.  After stopping for a nice lunch on the way up 35-E we ended up deciding that we were going to go up to Duluth and spend the night up there.

When we rolled in we didn’t have a clue where we were going to stay, we ended up pulling into The Inn on Lake Superior thanks to Siri helping us find a local hotel.  We got lucky that they had a room available because we ended up checking in the night before the Tall Ships Festival.  We probably should have researched if anything was going on when we were up there but that would have ruined the sense of adventure we were trying to experience.  We wanted to do something random and adventurous, which we never do, and it ended up working out for us in the end.

Being we rolled in when we did the room selection was a little on the pricey side but I was very happy with the room that we got.  We ended up getting a king suite that faced the bridge instead of the lake, I am sure the lake balcony room would have been beautiful but we also didn’t want to spend the extra money on that room.  Our room was located right across the hall from the pool and hot tub area, sadly, we did not use that accommodation because it was pretty packed with families from when we arrived to when it closed.  The Inn on Lake Superior offers a lot of fun things for families to enjoy during their stay.  Every night they have fires going out on the back patio and provide S’mores supplies for anyone that wants to enjoy a delicious campfire treat.  They offer free breakfast, which was extremely popular.  For the price we paid for the room I was very happy with what we got, not only did the room have the sleeping area but there was a pull out sofa in a sitting area with another television if you had more than two guests staying in the room.

Lake Superior was right out the back doors of the hotel and it was just amazing.  Once we got our stuff dropped off in the room we decided that we would take a walk around the Canal Park neighborhood.  We wanted to take in the scenery and of course see what Pokemon Canal Park had to offer to us.  It was such a beautiful experience as we walked down the boardwalk and took in the sunset and even got to see a big cargo ship leaving the canal.

People were out and about everywhere, kids were swimming in the lake and jumping off of what appeared to be an old building that collapsed into the lake.  I am not familiar with what the building used to be but it seemed like it was a popular thing for the kids to hang out on top of it and jump into the lake from it.

As we walked further down the boardwalk we found some fun photo ops and we got to take some great pictures by the lighthouse down the canal walkway.  Lots of people were out enjoying the beautiful evening and taking pictures of the sunset over the lake.

As we headed back in from the canal walkway we got to witness the bridge going up and a big cargo ship going through.  I love watching bridges when they raise to allow ships to pass under.  It is one of my favorite pass times when we go down to Stillwater, MN.  This cargo ship was a lot bigger than any ship I have seen going down the St. Croix River though.

After we walked around a little more we decided it was time for some dinner.  The weather was amazing with it being warm enough to enjoy dinner out on the patio at Bellisio’s, a nice little Italian restaurant.  I ended up having the Chicken Marsala which was super moist and delicious and full of flavor.  Dan ended up having a seafood pasta with lobster and shrimp in it which he said was very good.  It was a little more on the expensive side but for a nice dinner out it was perfect, I wouldn’t recommend it if you are trying to enjoy a little weekend getaway on a budget.  But, if you are looking for a more romantic place to celebrate something special this is a good place to go.

After our dinner we were both stuffed and pretty tired from the drive up.  We often take naps so being we decided to drive up in the middle of the day we didn’t have a nap at all, so we were both pretty tired.  We settled in for the evening and watched some television in the extremely comfortable king bed.  I did have a little trouble getting the room to a comfortable sleeping temperature, but that is probably because I like a really cold room and the small wall air unit in the room wasn’t keeping up with keeping it cool.

I got up early the next morning to check out the free breakfast but the lines were super long and there wasn’t much seating available with all the guests eating at around the same time.  I decided to get out and take in the scenery one more time before we headed home.  It was a warm morning, a lot warmer than the day before, and the Canal was already packed with people setting up their chairs to watch the Tall Ships Parade that was going to start at noon that day.  I was able to walk around and get a few more pictures and I even got to see a couple more Tall Ships that had come in over the night.

It would have been nice to stay and watch the Tall Ships and take part in the festival but being we hadn’t planned ahead there was no way we were going to get a room for another night and I had plans for the night so I wasn’t able to stay for another night.  I would definitely plan a weekend next summer to stay and enjoy the festival and get to explore more of Duluth Canal Park and other areas.

Overall Experience: 4/5

The hotel was very nice and a great place to stay.  The room was nice and the ability to get a room by just walking in was an awesome bonus.  The accommodations that were offered were good for the price point and I would have loved to enjoy the pool but there were just too many kids and it was just too crowded to enjoy.  Also the free breakfast is a nice perk but it was just too busy to even get in there and get food and find a place to sit and enjoy the meal.  I did grab a banana and I was a little disappointed with the selection of fresh fruit that was offered, it seemed like the food options leaned more towards options full of carbs and not so many healthier options.

Canal Park has so much to offer and I wish we had had more time to enjoy it and really explore it to the fullest.  I loved being able to walk around and take in such beautiful sights and the breeze coming off the lake while you are walking is a very enjoyable.  There are tons of people up in there during the summer and it makes for a great option to people watch with lots of people out on boats and even jet skis.  There is tons of food options within walking distance of the hotel so you don’t have to worry about driving to get to somewhere to eat, which is good because the streets were pretty busy.

Pokemon Go Rating: 2 Pokeballs

There weren’t many new Pokemon that we hadn’t already caught but we did manage to come across some Growlithe’s which was a new catch for us.  There were lots of Pokestops throughout the Canal Park neighborhood and along the boardwalk which made for a nice chance to help raise our XP when we checked in at them, don’t have to worry about being short on Pokeballs when you are walking around.  Another great thing is that it is such a nice neighborhood to walk through that you can get in some good distance to help hatch your eggs.
